Unplugging
I’m going to try a thing. It feels incredibly exciting and super scary all at once. Which leads me to believe the move is long overdue. Starting tonight, at 5:30pm every day for the next two weeks, I‘ll dock my phone, shut down my computer, and unplug until 6am the next morning. Whaaaat?! Is it possible? Can I even do it?! I think so. I hope so. I want to.
Both my manager and my mom have my husband’s phone number. If there’s a late-night, political rush job, or my mom needs emergency tech support (true story) I’m still reachable. Otherwise, I am going to try and take the opportunity to let my world spin a little slower. My hope is that I will be more present and less frantic. I know what you are thinking – it’s not just work; what about recipes, the news, amazon, a timer, reading books, navigation – how will you do those things that you usually do on your phone/computer?! I am old enough to remember a time when we did all those things without technology and I’m going to see if I can remember what it was like. I kid – but in all honestly I feel so compelled by my phone and addicted to it and I want a break – just to see what it might feel like. So here we go. (Inspired by this youtube video of Mayim Bialik talking about her experience totally unplugging.)
Puppies
Why do I feel the need to manage life – why am I so overwhelmed? Let me tell you why. Last week we brought home puppies. Plural. Ever taken on something that seemed manageable, only to find out it turns your life completely inside out? This is like that. They are amazing bringers of love and joy annnnd also chaos and sleeplessness and stinkyness. Much like children. It’s not like we already had our shit together either. We were already drowning with three kids – then all of a sudden we were holding two puppies. One of my favorite comedy clips from Jim Gaffigan touches on this very thing! If you can spare ten minutes, and/or need a laugh, this audio clip is worth your time.
Smarter In Seconds
Have you ever used the term “Third World”? I have. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I had a sense it was not the best term to use. Then one of my fav insta influencers told me why! This is Blair Imani and she does a series called Smarter in Seconds and I kid you not every time I get smarter. In seconds. I love her. She’s worth a follow – I feel like I should be less surprised at this point how much I still have to learn.
Have you ever tried to really unplug?
Did it help? How did it feel? Was it scary?
Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while,
you could miss it.
