Equality Cards
We are big game players in our family. Like BIG game players. If you are ever looking for a game recommendation hit me up. Living on the bus full-time we got more into card games because of our space limitations. There are so many great ones! My current favorites: for two players – Piquet (learned about this game reading Regency Romance Novels), for four players – my favorite remains Euchre, to play with all ages – Garbage, easy enough for a four year old but I still really enjoy it – unlike Go Fish.
One of the kiddos asked me why the King is always a better card than the queen. Ummm, what? I had never thought about it before! Why is the King always better than the Queen?!! That’s crap! Then we discussed further and realized in all the many, many decks of cards we have owned and played with, not one (not one!) had a royal family that was anything but white. Well f$*@ck people!? I’m embarrassed that my kids had to bring these inequalities to my attention. But I am glad to say we found a solution. Queeng Playing Cards. They have equalized the genders and made them diverse. These make my heart happy and a teenager created them. Of course she did.
Hot Pink Hummus
Beet hummus!! Who knew this was such an amazing thing?! I don’t know if I love it more because of it’s popping flavor or because it’s hot pink. Actually I do know. It’s because it’s hot pink. I facilitate a cooking class at my kids school and this week we did three varieties of hummus. Traditional (but so creamy and delicious), Chocolate (tastes like nutella made with beans – so good – not linking to the recipe because I improvised a lot), and beet. They were all amazing but the beet was a stand out in my opinion – again mostly because of the color. I know this is a hubris thing – but you make this for a party and you will be the talk of the town. For real. Cook to impress I always say – I have actually never said that until now, but it rings true.
Talk to Yourself
In the last year I have started talking to myself. Not in that way of mumbling under my breath as I carry on a conversation in my head that I wish I would have had with that person at the grocery store last week. But in a really positive – almost meditative way.
It looks like kind of like this:
“Hey creativity/right brain/child of play (whatever resonates at the time), the world really needs what you have to offer. I want to honor what you do so well. You bring so much goodness. Wanna come out and play?”
And then I listen and guess what – it always want to. My creativity always answers in the affirmative – usually with a leap of excitement. “Thanks for asking me!! Yes! I want to play – let’s do this! I love to play – I’ve got so much goodness to lay on you today.”
It’s weird. Yes. But give it a try. You might be surprised at how good weird can be.
Do you talk to yourself? Does yourself talk back?
What does it say?
